When a necromancer reaches the end of his natural (or unnaturally extended) life many become wraiths. These are the necromancers who have not been capable of becoming liches or for whom the process failed. They become beings wreathed in black cloaks who are skeletal underneath and entirely etheral. That is to say, they cannot be injured by mundane attacks but can strike their foes. These strikes can be blocked by the mundane but many a wraith simply passes it's hand through a persons chest and eviscerates their lungs from within.
All wraiths, having been necromancers in life, will be attuned to the element of darkness. Many also retain their necromantic powers from life but this power comes at a price. They are extremely susceptable to light, cannot normally grow stronger and can be destroyed by total annihilation. They can gain in power by attaining powerful darkness artefacts and this is often their only goal in unlife, to grow stronger and to find a way to gain life anew.
